COMMANDER’S CORNER

This March we celebrate the 80th birthday of the organization of the American Legion.  We here at Post 95, Department of Tennessee, are very fortunate to be a part of this great organization which means so much to our veterans and our schools and youth organizations.

Post 95 is very fortunate to have so many Legionnaires who stay so active in the work of this post, without any pay, only the satisfaction they get from jobs well done.  We have something for everyone at the post—great food by our kitchen crew (day and night), great entertainment—Big Band and different entertainment in the hall and lounge.

I believe that for your $21 annual membership it is the best buy in the state.  If you haven’t renewed, now is the time to reap your benefits.

    For God and Country.

Ken Wild, Commander

MEMBERSHIP REPORT

Post 95 membership is 1202.  We need 165 to reach our goal of 1367.

One of the membership problems of our post is maintaining correct mailing addresses.  Recently letters were mailed to all members who have not paid 1999 dues, encouraging them to pay their dues.  As of today, 25 of those mailed have been returned because of incorrect mailing address.  We want to correct this.  In the future, if you move, please see that we have your correct mailing address so you will receive your Legion mail.  If you have not paid your 1999 dues, this will be the last newsletter you will receive.

Carl Athearn, Adjutant 867-7644

Cathy Brown, Asst. Adjutant 266-1610

Use Of The Telephone

The telephone in the Post 95 lounge is for the convenience of  all members.  We have information that some members are using the Legion telephone to conduct their own business affairs.  This practice is discourteous to other members.  Post 95 has had a long standing house rule that calls are limited to three minutes.  When anyone dominates the telephone for business affairs, they are stealing from your Legion.  Please be considerate in your use of the telephone.

SAL MEETING

There will be a meeting of the Sons of the American Legion, Squadron 95 Friday, Mar. 19, at 8 PM.  Come to the Legion, enjoy a meal and attend the SAL meeting.  It will be held in the upstairs meeting room.

FROM THE CHAPLAIN

Prayer: Psalm 7’11: God judgeth the righteous and God is angry with the wicked every day.

We must keep these members and their families in our prayers: Jim Smith, Bob Doss, Greg Brown, Bill Lemone and Bob Burgner.

Let us remember these members in Post Everlasting: John Beck, Robert Brock, Bob Divvers and Jim Hardie.

Larry Wirth, Chaplain 855-5824

BLOOD ASSURANCE

Donations for January: James F. Shields, Marilyn Nagel, Jess C. Williams, Alicia K. Hickey, William A. Ledford, Robert F. Price, Willard A. Thrash, Thomas A. Gillespie, Ralph W. Hardeman, George S. Butler, Donald B. Hays and Larry C. Marter.

Melvin Brown, Chairman, 867-3449

THIRD DISTRICT MEETING

The next Third District meeting will be held in Chattanooga, with Post 14 of Chattanooga as host.  It will be Saturday, Mar. 27, at Wally’s Restaurant, I-75 and Ringgold Road.  Cost of the meal will be $7.  All Legion, SAL and Auxiliary members are welcome.  Please advise Carl Athearn if you plan to attend, as reservations are necessary.

AUXILIARY NEWS

Mid-winter went very well.  Aileen Wilson did an excellent job with the hospitality room.

The annual Las Vegas Night was again filled with fun and excitement.  A special thanks to everyone who helped collect gifts for the auction.  Thanks to the people who donated the gifts.

The March meeting will be our initiation  of new members.  If you have not been to a meeting to receive your membership pin, this is the meeting you will not want to miss.  We will also have a memorial service for our deceased members.  At the meeting, we will have a report from the nominating committee.  If you have someone  you would like to have as an officer, come and nominate them.

The board passed a standing rule: all members are to be in the meeting or leave the bar during a meeting.  This is the same as  the Legion house rule.

I hope all members who have been sick or in the hospital are all doing better.  We have missed all of you and hope you will be able to attend the next meeting.

Remember, if you have not paid your dues, we need them as we only need 17 to meet our goal.

Board meeting Mar. 10, 7 PM

HONOR GUARD

As most of our members know, or should know, our Honor Guard is in charge of retiring worn, torn or faded flags that have become unserviceable and recommended to be retired.

We try to do this ceremony once or twice a year.  We will set up a time as our weather warms up.  We will inspect the Colors that have served our Post and the area and hold a Flag Burial Service, one more of your American Legion Post 95 and area veteran’s benefits.

Ralph C. Wilson
 Honor Guard Commander, 866-0138
