NEWSLETTER April 2000 |
FOR GOD AND COUNTRY |
April 2000 Newsletter Commander's Corner Well, it's time again for the nomination of officers at Post 95 for the 2000/2001 term. Prospective nominees should be willing to devote time and energy throughout the term of the office sought. All candidates should have his or her papers on file at the Post. Proof of eligibility must be on file before you are put on the ballot. Judge Advocate Virgil Christa is specific on this requirement. This year we will have four positions available on the Executive Committee - one three-year term and three one-year terms. Nominations will be on April 21 at our regular monthly meeting. Special thanks to those who have either signed up a new member to Post 95, or have renewed a previous member. We will have a drawing on the 21st to give away prizes to any members who have signed up new members between March 1 and April 21. We have some great prizes for those that have shown their support in helping Post 95 get closer to our membership goal. Good Job! I would like to thank Jeane Athearn and the Ladies Auxiliary for the cake they presented to the Legion at our Regular monthly meeting last month. The cake celebrated the American Legion's 81st birthday, which was March 15-17, 1919. Do you know where the term "the whole nine yards" came from? It is from WWII fighter pilots in the South Pacific. When arming their airplanes on the ground, the 50 caliber machine gun ammo belts measured exactly 27 feet. If the pilots fired all of the belt at one target, that target got "the whole 9 yards " Anyway, just some trivia you didn't learn in school. For God and Country, Jim Ratcliffe, Commander MEMBERSHIP REPORT As of the end of March we have 1,257 members. That is 91.9% of our goal of 1,367. We are 110 members short of being at an all time high at Post 95. Lets all work together to reach our goal. This will be the last newsletter that you will receive if you have not renewed your membership. Cathy Brown, Adjutant MONTHLY MEETING Friday, Apr. 21 All who plan to attend must show current membership card. Spouses, Auxiliary and SALs welcome. In accordance with by-laws, no alcoholic beverages in meeting hall. Proper dress is required. HONOR GUARD NEWS Attention: At the next regular meeting, our Color Guard will go to our American Legion white shirt , white pistol belt, and dark navy pants. Any questions? Call me. I hope the Auxiliary Ladies and a few Legionnaires received some enlightening information at my last talk to those in attendance. Number one, let your funeral director know our wishes, i.e., flag, military funeral, and be able to show proof of honorable discharge. Have the director call the Honor Guard Commander or the Legion. We need as much time to prepare as possible. I would feel remiss if I did not mention our Honor Guard's great loss of two of our dedicated Veterans. They served over 13 years, always willing to make every event if possible. Fred Fields, 86 years old, and Etcyle Raines, 79 years old, passed away within 12 days of each other. I am sadden by their passing and my heart goes out to each family. These were very good men who served their God, country, and their fellowmen well. Ralph C. Wilson, Honor Guard Commander (706) 866-0138 FROM THE CHAPLAIN Prayer: Romans 6:23. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal, life through Jesus Christ our Lord. We must keep these members in our prayers: Bob Doss, Bob Nettles, Ralph Hardeman, Robert Knudsen, Dooley Annis, Eddie Edmondson, and Bob Blair. Let us remember these members in the Post Everlasting: Clifford Haynes, Ruby Skinner, and Fred Fields. Larry Wirth, Chaplain, 855-5824 CAVC OFFICERS Installation of officers for the year 2000-2001 were installed for the Chattanooga Area Veterans Council Mar. 24 at the annual banquet. Officers are Chairman Dan Lovin, First Vice Steve Stewart, Second Vice Cloyd Smith, Treasurer Charles Levine, Secretary Sherry Kimbrow, Trustee Ernest Seagle and Honor Guard Commander Ralph Wilson. Charlotte Vandergiiff was named auxiliary member of the year. There was no nomination or award for Veterans of the Year. AUXILIARY NEWS The Auxiliary would like to thank the American Legion for the wonderful time they had on St. Patrick's Day. Congratulations to Dot Stewart. We are now at 100 percent of our membership. We have 448 paid members. On March 23, Eva Hickey and Annissa Witt did the Memorial Service for our deceased members. Jeane Athearn was our initiation officer for our new members. She did a wonderful job. We hope to see all of our new members at our meetings each month. We welcome each one of our new members into our Auxiliary. Our Spring Fling Luncheon was a lot of fun. It was an honor to have our Executive Board with us. I'd like to thank everyone for their help to make this a great success. As we all know, May 5 and 6 will be for our Poppy drive. We will need as many volunteers as we can get. If you can volunteer at least 2 hours please notify Jeane Athearn at 867-7644. The election for new officers will be at our April meeting. They will be installed in May. Please come and cast your vote. This was left out of my last newsletter so I would like to make this correction. The Auxiliary would like to thank Ralph Wilson for speaking on Americanism at our February meeting.
