Commander's Corner

Again, I would like to thank the SALs on a job well done with our monthly meal. Also, many thanks to Aileen Wilson, Ernest Gilliam, the SAL wives and Auxiliary.

The POW Health Fair held at Post 95 last month was a big success. About 100 people, including the wives of the POWs were in attendance. Thanks to the Ladies Auxiliary for serving snacks during the event, and all the others who gave a helping hand.

Post 95 will be hosting another event this month. It is the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, which will be on Friday, Oct. 27, from 1 to 4 PM in the meeting hall. Plan on attending as this will be a very important meeting.

I would like to thank Mark Rouse for taking the lead in getting a U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps program started at Post 95. I will be letting you know more about this program as it develops.

Don’t forget about our Halloween party on Saturday, Oct 28, at 7 PM. Prizes will be given for the best dressed man and woman, so get that costume ready and come on out!

The Early Bird Breakfast will be from 8 to 10 AM on Saturday, Oct 7, in the meeting hall. Blood Assurance will be at the Post for donations. After the breakfast, we are planning to have a horseshoe tournament and a shuffle board tournament in our Rec area. Come on out and enjoy the food, fellowship, and fun.

The Mid Winter Conference, scheduled in January 2001, will be held in Memphis. If you plan on attending and would like to ride the bus we will take from Post 95, please sign the list posted in the lounge. Seating is filling up fast.

If you have not renewed your dues, now is the time.

For God and Country,

Jim Ratcliffe, Commander

All who plan to attend must show current membership card. Spouses, Auxiliary and SALs welcome. In accordance with by-laws, no alcoholic beverages in meeting hall. Proper dress is required.

MEMBERSHIP REPORT

Ask Just Ask for membership in the American Legion Post 95. If you haven’t paid your 2001 dues by Oct. 7, you can pay them at the Early Bird Breakfast. The breakfast will be 8 to 10 AM. We have 743 members who have paid their 2001 dues. Let’s all pay our Legion dues by Oct. 31, and be at 1,000 members paid, or 73% of our goal. We are going to try to be at 1,355 paid members by Dec. 31.

Thank you,

Cathy Brown, Adjutant 266-1610

SAL NEWS

As always, and extremely important, thanks to the SAL wives and Auxiliary who helped with last months dinner.

SALs are raffling a really nice Sunbeam Gas Grill valued at $200. The raffle will continue until the drawing at the October monthly meeting. Raffle tickets are $1 each, and can be obtained from any actively involved SAL member. Just ask around.

Don’t forget the Early Bird Breakfast on Oct 7. Pay your dues by then, and enjoy a great breakfast and the really fun activities planned by the Legion afterward.

SAL membership is growing all the time, so come be a part of an increasingly active SAL program. Get involved and help make decisions concerning the future of your SAL program.

Dale Gore, SAL Adjutant

AUXILIARY NEWS

If you missed the Labor Day Bar-B-Q, you missed some good food, music, and fellowship. Thanks to the SALs and their wives for the good food. Dot Stewart had her table set up to receive Auxiliary dues. We now have passed our 50% we needed at this time. Way to go, lady! Jean Athearn has started selling tickets for a $500 giveaway at the Christmas party. Tickets are $1 each, or 6 for $5. Ladies, see Jean and get some tickets to sell. Also, the Auxiliary will be having a bake sale. We will have all kinds of goodies.

Due to the lack of interest in the Oktoberfest since it would be the same day as the Halloween party, something else will be planned. Information will be posted.

Ladies, come and join us in our meetings, and see what all is going on and participate.

Pat McDade, Auxiliary President

HONOR GUARD NEWS

We were pleased to have at our last Post meeting several members of the East Ridge High School Jr. ROTC to visit and observe our Honor Guard team post our five service flags, as our Post band played each of the five service songs. Our Commander called for the posting of the American flag and the American Legion Post 95 colors. The students told the Commander and me they were very impressed and would like to post the colors as a part of their training, and as something for them to look forward to. Thanks to Cathy Brown and Barbara Carter for going double duty to help with the posting at our last meeting. They are Honor Guard members also. See you at our next meeting.

Ralph C Wilson

Honor Guard Commander
