The Armed Forces Day Parade, canceled but revived by the Chattanooga Area Veterans Council, will have veteran and civilian units joining active military participation for the May 19 event. Heading the parade will be the nationally known color guard from the 101st Airborne Assault Division, regarded as tops in the country. The day’s schedule begins at 7 AM with a prayer vigil presented by LaFonde McGee at National Cemetery, followed by a brunch at Warner Park Field House. Meal tickets are $5 each, with Bill Carman, Charles Bearden and Joe Murphy in charge. A clothesline art show will be at Warner Park under Dr. Jim Henry’s supervision from 8 AM to 11 AM. And the parade from 4th and Market streets to 10 Street begins at 11 AM. A speakers stand will be installed with city, county, state, national and military dignitaries expected. CAVC chairman Ralph Astin said he anticipated a wide variety of entries from the 50 veteran organizations covering the tri-state area of Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama. FAX (615) 698-7803 From Pete Chaney, Media Dir.; Date: May 3, 1995 To: News Editor The 50th anniversary of VE Day will be marked May 8 in Chattanooga with appearances of five generals, an expected 100 infantrymen, high school band music and a stroll through military history. Members
of the 84th Infantry Division will participate with the generals in 3 PM
ceremonies at National Cemetery to unveil a plaque in Honor Circle
commemorating VE Day. At 2:30
PM prior to the ceremony, the Soddy Daisy High School band will perform. Open
house featuring World War II artifacts will be all day at the Medal of
Honor Museum of Military History on Georgia Avenue. Veterans,
especially those of World War II, have been urged to wear their uniforms

Day Parade A parade that was
cancelled for “lack of interest” found new life from
Chattanooga area veterans.
There will be an Armed Forces Day Parade, thanks to the
47-units of the Chattanooga Area Veterans Council.
CAVC chairman Bill Carman appointed Edith Adkins as parade
committee chairman under sponsorship of the CAVC.
Nominated and elected for her “expertise, energy and
charisma,” Edith wasted no time in bringing in committee members with
experience over the nearly 50-year history of the parade and in recruiting
new help.
Parade is set for 11 AM May 19 to go from 4th and Market to
11th and Market. A breakfast
is planned from 8 AM to 10 AM that morning at the Warner Park Field House.
Gov. Don Sunquist has been invited to speak at 9 AM at
Warner Park. All
participating units were asked to bring flags for display at the
breakfast.
This is the only surviving Armed Forces Day parade in the

50th anniversary Parade set for May 19 Members of VFW Post 4848 will join other veteran
organizations, active military forces and civilian units from the
tri-state and across the country for the May 19 Armed Forces parade and
50th anniversary celebration of the end of World War II.
The parade is under sponsorship of the Chattanooga Area
Veterans Council. Ralph Astin
is chairman.
Ceremonies begin at 7 AM in National Cemetery with a prayer
vigil organized by Lafonde McGee followed by a 8 AM to 10 AM brunch at
Warner Park Field house organized by Bill and Sue Carman and Joe and
Virginia Murphy. Tickets are
$5 each.

Jim Henry, from 8 AM
to 11 AM.
