Celebrations marking the end of World War II are alive and well in Chattanooga.

The Armed Forces Day Parade, canceled but revived by the Chattanooga Area Veterans Council, will have veteran and civilian units joining active military participation for the May 19 event.  Heading the parade will be the nationally known color guard from the 101st Airborne Assault Division, regarded as tops in the country.

The day’s schedule begins at 7 AM with a prayer vigil presented by LaFonde McGee at National Cemetery, followed by a brunch at Warner Park Field House.  Meal tickets are $5 each, with Bill Carman, Charles Bearden and Joe Murphy in charge.

A clothesline art show will be at Warner Park under Dr. Jim Henry’s supervision from 8 AM to 11 AM.  And the parade from 4th and Market streets to 10 Street begins at 11 AM.  A speakers stand will be installed with city, county, state, national and military dignitaries expected.

CAVC chairman Ralph Astin said he anticipated a wide variety of entries from the 50 veteran organizations covering the tri-state area of Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama.  The CAVC took over as sponsors of the Armed Forces Day Celebration.

Marine Capt. Fred Bryan, 267-2515, is parade coordinator.  Edith Adkins, 698-5230, is general chairperson.

The 50th anniversary of VE Day will be marked May 8 in Chattanooga with appearances of five generals, an expected 100 infantrymen, high school band music and a stroll through military history.

Members of the 84th Infantry Division will participate with the generals in 3 PM ceremonies at National Cemetery to unveil a plaque in Honor Circle commemorating VE Day.  At 2:30 PM prior to the ceremony, the Soddy Daisy High School band will perform.

Open house featuring World War II artifacts will be all day at the Medal of Honor Museum of Military History on Georgia Avenue.

Veterans, especially those of World War II, have been urged to wear their uniforms that day.

CAVC veterans save Tennessee’s

only Armed Forces Day Parade

A parade that was cancelled for “lack of interest” found new life from  Chattanooga area veterans.

There will be an Armed Forces Day Parade, thanks to the 47-units of the Chattanooga Area Veterans Council.  CAVC chairman Bill Carman appointed Edith Adkins as parade committee chairman under sponsorship of the CAVC.

Nominated and elected for her “expertise, energy and charisma,” Edith wasted no time in bringing in committee members with experience over the nearly 50-year history of the parade and in recruiting new help.

Parade is set for 11 AM May 19 to go from 4th and Market to 11th and Market.  A breakfast is planned from 8 AM to 10 AM that morning at the Warner Park Field House.

Gov. Don Sunquist has been invited to speak at 9 AM at Warner Park.  All participating units were asked to bring flags for display at the breakfast.

This is the only surviving Armed Forces Day parade in the state.
