AF Week Celebration

Patriotism shines with Armed Forces Day Parade

April 5, 2005--Chattanooga continues to show its patriotism with pride.  The longest continuing Armed Forces Day parade for a larger city will be held in Chattanooga May 6 beginning at 10:30 AM on Market Street.

Curtis Adams is civilian chairman this year and Patty Parks serves as military chairman.  The grand marshal will be SMCM Sam Swope, USN (Ret.) and the keynote speaker for the noon luncheon at the Read House will be Adm. Skip Bowman, USN (Ret.)

Capt. Paul Williams, USN (Ret.) will give the invocation.

Although Armed Forces Day is officially May 15, the earlier date was selected to allow participation by students.  JROTC units have become an integral part of the event.

This year the navy is the host service in the rotating program followed by the Chattanooga Area Veterans Council which began sponsorship of the parades ten years ago when it was being cancelled.

Chattanooga began holding parades to honor active duty military men and women following a declaration by President Harry Truman on August 31, 1949, to create an Armed Forces Day observance .  Bill Carman was chairman of the CAVC in 1994 when that organization undertook sponsorship.

Edith Adkins was civilian chairman that year and Bill Raines was the military project officer.  Veterans were honored that year.

It was later expanded to a week long celebration.

Those on the committees with assignments were Williard Sisson, Kevin West, Pete Chaney, Tom Borlogou, David Maul, Edith Whitman, James Darling, Carl Levi, Billy Hewitt, Police Sgt. Jeff Clarke, Jim Shull, Dan Lovin, Johnny Horne, William Blake, Col. Tom McConnell, Mary Smith, Dennis Smith, Burt Sawyer, Jessie Smith, Robert Daughtery, Carl Levi, Bob Lahiere, Ernie Seagle and Fred Headrick.
