National Armed Forces Day Observance

April 2002

Billboards promoting the Armed Forces Week and Parade in Chattanooga have been prepared by Clear Channel Outdoor Advertising and are erected around Chattanooga for the May 13-18, 2002, celebration.  The parade has been continual in Chattanooga since 1949 and is the only uninterrupted observance in the United States in a larger city.  The Chattanooga Area Veterans Council, comprised of veteran units from the tri-state area of Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama, has coordinated the parade since 1995.  Since Chattanooga has been called "The Most Patriotic City in America," the CAVC expanded the one-day parade to a week long observance with participation by the different branches of service.

Armed Forces Week Parade Committee Officers conduct a recent meeting at the Naval and Marine Reserve center on Amnicola Highway.  From left are Military Projects Officer Lt. Col. Frank Hughes, Civilian Chairman Judge Robert Summitt, Treasurer Charles Levine, Secretary Candace Underwood and CAVC Liaison Officer Dan Lovin.  Each year a different branch of the military is recognized in rotation.  This year it is the U.S. Marine Corps.

Keynote Speaker
Maj. Gen. Stephen T. Johnson (USMC) will be keynote speaker for the luncheon following the May 17 parade and will be in the Silver Ballroom of the Read House.  The general is currently serving as Director, Manpower Plans and Policy Division, Manpower and Reserve Affairs, Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps.  He assumed his current assignment in May of 2000.
For further information on Gen. Johnson, go to www.usmc.mil and click on General Biographies.  Then go to Gen. Johnson's name.
