We Must Remember

In the opening moments of Steven Spielberg's
"Saving Private Ryan”, soldiers approaching the beach are riddled with
bullets. The movie graphically shows mortar fire blowing apart human beings. In
these graphic moments, the audience experiences the horrors of war.
"Saving Private Ryan" artfully brings home a
point to remember-- many Americans will go into battle to preserve the ideals we
believe in. The film serves as a reminder that “war is hell”.
Veteran’s Day reminds us of the cost of war.
Veteran’s Days reminds us of the heroes who gave of themselves--to protect us.
Veteran’s Day reminds us how everyday people, in unusual circumstances, become
heroes. Veteran’s Day reminds us of the many people who are willing to serve.
September 11, 2001 is also a reminder of everyday people
becoming heroes in times of “war”. September 11th is a day showing us the
bravery of those who sacrificed themselves to save others. After September 11th,
the word veteran takes on a new meaning. The “combat” heroes of this day
include policeman, firefighters, and passengers on commercial flights. Each
responded by giving of themselves, giving to save the lives of others. Many paid
the ultimate price with acts of heroism.
Like many soldiers before them, the heroes of September
11 chose to die so that others may live. With each act of heroism, we are
reminded of those veterans who served our country. We are reminded of those who
are willing to give their lives to preserve our freedoms, and our way of life.
On November 11, we should pause for moment of silence, a
moment to give thanks for the veterans, a moment to remember the cost of war…
Most important, we must not forget…
we must remember.
