Duran Duran at the House of Blues

When I think of the ‘80’s, there are a few groups that come to mind right away—one of them is Duran Duran. From their start, Duran Duran has been a symbol of the England of that time period. Their look, their sound, their image – all screams "’80’s British Pop".

To be honest, when my girlfriend Katie let me know that they were going to be playing at the House of Blues in Hollywood, I wasn’t expecting much. There are a ton of ‘80’s groups playing out again, and most of them are lacking the shine and mystery of yesteryear (probably because they’re playing for money, not for the love of music). Katie was excited about it, so I said "why not?".

The show started at nine in the evening, and we arrived exactly at 9:05. I had no idea that there were still so many many fans—the House of Blues was jam-packed! What I love about that place most is that it’s small enough that you can see the performance from any section –we were on the left-hand side, by the bar.

They played a lot of their best-known songs like "When You Come Undone", "Barbarella", and "Girls On Film", and a song by another group—the rap tune "White Lines" (I wasn’t aware that they had recorded a cover of that one). The show was great! Simon Le Bon talked to the crowd, told jokes, and danced like a wild man. They played without stopping until 11:15 – a good long time for any group. They finished with "Rio", but added two encores with "Notorious", and "All She Wants Is". I was extremely impressed. I hope that they keep playing until they’re old and grey (like the Stones). Every time they come to L.A., we’ll be there, too!
