Comment . . . Pete Chaney

Christmas is always a sad time, a happy time. As we get older, those we have seen outnumber the ones we will see. Nostalgia brings back visions of Christmas past clearly vivid in our memories.

The first one for that son or daughter. The wide eyed wonderment of young eyes scanning the tree, ears listing for Santa on the roof, the deliciously tempting unopened packages. Then there are the remembered faces. the faint recollection of familiar voices. All those that are gone and we will never see or hear again.

We remember happy Christmases, and unhappy ones. We remember the times we sat down for family dinner at grandmother’s where men ate first, then the wives and the children had a table in the kitchen to accommodate the large family gathering. And we remember the sad Christmases overshadowed by death .

It’s easy to sink into depression when we use the day as a gauge to decided if we have made our lives better or worse than on previous Christmases.

But all the sadness, all the self guilt and depression can be washed away with one memory—why we celebrate this day.

Nearly 2,000 years ago there was a birth in a manger and the Prince of Peace brought us hope and faith, a meaning to life to look forward to the future—where we can try to make this a better world through love of our neighbor.

MOC, MOCA plan Christmas party

The annual Cooties Christmas Party will replace the December meeting on Sunday, Dec. 13. It begins at 2 PM, according to Seam Squirrel Jack Thomas.

On the menu will be turkey and ham with all the trimmings. The MOCA will bring covered dishes.

A limit of $15 is set on gift exchanges.

The MOCA invited the MOC to accompany them to Cumberland Hall on Standifer Gap Rd. Nov. 20 to a party.

And the MOC and MOCA joined forces Oct. 22 for the Halloween and hot dog party given residents at Pine Bridge Moccasin Bend.

SHOTGUN OFFERED

A Remington 870 shotgun will be given Dec. 20. See Fred Kizer for the $1 tickets.

Notes . . .

The e-board position of TOMMY McDOWELL was declared vacant at the Nov. meeting. His work schedule has prevented his attending meetings. Election to the board will be held at the December meeting.

Doing a great job organizing the Salvation Army post bellringers, FRED KIZER will find himself with more assignments. When you get a good man . . .

********

The Honor Guard’s halftime appearance at the UTC Nov. 14 game was cancelled due to the small time slot allowed. The band from MTSU needed all the time at the half.

Has DOUG GALLANT fallen in love with the Puerto Rico sunshine? Not really. His work with FEMA to aid hurricane victims won’t be over until mid-December when he will return home.
