100 TH ANNIVERSARY--two of them--are being toasted at VFW Post 4848 by Fred Kiser (left) and Bill Tickle.  No, they aren't that old.  The Veterans of Foreign Wars and Coca Cola celebrate their 100th birthday.  An e-board member, Fred and Bill who is post commander are both retired Coca Cola employees.  After discharge from the army, Fred worked with Coca Cola 35 years.  Bill, who retired from the navy, was with the company ten years.

Election of 1999-2000 officers set

Nominations for full slate for election to be held at regular Apr. 1 meeting

When VFW Post 4848 was formed in 1957, there was little thought about the turn of the century, about the year 2000.  But now it’s on us and members will be nominating officers for the turn of the millennium.

Nominations will be at the regular membership meeting Thursday, Apr. 1, at 7 PM.  Election will be the last Thursday in the month, Apr. 29, from noon to 8 PM.

Offices from commander to judge advocate will be open.  Two executive board members and one trustee will be decided.  Board members and trustees are elected for three years, with two on the board and one trustee coming off each year.

Although no candidates have officially declared, Commander Bill Tickle has been mentioned as possible running for a third straight term.  No commander has ever served three straight terms.

Jim Perry and George Hancock each served three terms, not consecutively.

Two others have been mentioned as possible contenders for the top position: Bob Blair, currently vice commander, and David Wilson, now chaplain.

In 1996, John Hancock and Jim Perry were elected to the e-board, and Bill Bordwine was picked as trustee.  Since then each has resigned, with Bill now on the board.

Those slots will be up for the election.

And it will be for veterans and their guests. A boat dock looks more like a reality than it did since a small dock was lost years ago.

Commander Bill Tickle appointed a committee to work on the project: Joe Cheek, Doug Gallant and Pete Chaney. Now help may be coming from Hamilton’s former County Executive Dalton Roberts.

"We are very optimistic that Dalton has offered his expertise to help with this project," Commander Bill Tickle said.

Post 4848 has had a boat dock permit from the Army Corps of Engineers since May 11, 1973. It would need to be used before the riverwalk is completed at the rear of post property which meets the Tennessee River.

The dock would be property of the post and reserved for members and guests. A ballpark construction price of $20,000 has been obtained.

The committee will work on raising funds for the project from private sources.

AN AWARD to the Ladies Auxiliary is accepted by President Faye England from Dan Loving, second vice chairman of the Chattanooga Area Veterans Association at the Mar. 19 meeting.  Faye and the auxiliary assisted with the annual USO banquet.  In the background are Sherry Kimbrow, CAVC secretary and auxiliary chaplain, and Milton Thomas, CAVC chairman.  Sue Carman (below) receives an award for work she and Bill did for the USO banquet as Second Vice Chairman Ernest Seagle confers with Milton.  Bill was master of ceremonies.  (IPS photos by Pete Chaney)

Ladies Auxiliary to elect officers
at April meeting

A busy time lies ahead for the Post 4848 Ladies Auxiliary.

The Thursday, Apr. 1, meeting will have nomination and election of officers for the 1999-2000 year.  But before that on Thursday the ladies will treat the Siskin preschool children with an Easter egg party at 9:30 AM Thursday morning.

“We hope to see everyone there to help,” Auxiliary President Faye England said.

“We need some strong men to carry treats and people to help prepare the food.  It’s a heartwarming event.”

She reminded members nominations and election of 1999-2000 officers will be held at the April meeting.

The president is already look ahead to May 8 when the auxiliary will hold their annual TIPS picnic for handicapped children

At the Mar. 19 meeting of the Chattanooga Area Veterans Council, awards were presented Post 4848’s Auxiliary for its work on the annual USO Dance.  Faye said they appreciated the honor.

CAVC banquet set for Apr. 9

The annual banquet and installation of officers will be held Friday, Apr. 9, in the Roosevelt Room at the Choo Choo.  A cash bar opens at 6:30 PM and dinner will be at 7 PM.

New officers for the coming year were chosen at the Mar. 19 CAVC meeting.  Ernest Seagle will take the chairman’s gavel from Milton Thomas.

Veterans disapprove VA hospital change

Area veterans attending the CAVC forum Mar. 19 to hear area VA officials explain possible hospital changes weren’t receptive.

John Dandridge, responsible for 27 VA medical facilities, said considerations were to move some services from Murfreesboro to Nashville and vice versa.  He said no changes were “in concrete.”

Veterans protested moving treatment even farther from Chattanooga.

Greg Vandergriff led a petition drive which gathered some 3,000 signatures against any changes.  He said 35 more miles could mean life or death.

Post 4848 Cooties installs officers

Officers for Pup Tent 21 of the Military Order of Cooties have been installed for the year.

They are Commander Bill Bordwine (serving his seventh term), Vice Commander Roy Stone, Jr. Vice Commander Ben Crabtree, Jr., Quartermaster Doug Gallant and Chaplain Tommy Duckworth.

“The ladies fixed us a delicious meal,” Bill said.  “Everyone enjoyed it.

“We have a great working team and will be able to get a lot of things done this year.”

Shotgun tickets

Tickets for the shotgun to be given away are available at the post, with requests for a $1 donation.  The winner will be ready to pick up the prize and go hunting Apr. 29.

Comment . . . Pete Chaney

There is much opposition to Americans going into a cesspool of European ethnic hatred.  It’s on the other side of the world, doesn’t affect us, people say.  Let Europeans solve their own problems.

Thank God the American generation today doesn’t know the horror of war, when the other side of the world could have reached their doorsteps.  Within our lifetime, and that of our fathers—from the Argonne to Kuwait. Those of us old grayheads remember when Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain came back from meeting with Hitler and exclaimed “peace in our time.”

It was just a German problem.  Adolph didn’t like Jews, Poles—and anyone who disagreed with him.  He began ethnic cleansing, which is going on now in what was Yugoslavia.  But some still say it’s a local problem.

What happens if America, the remaining superpower, does nothing in Serbia?  Maybe they’ll just kill each other off and it won’t go beyond their borders, won’t ultimately bring it to American shores.

That’s what many thought when Hitler could have been stopped.

And consider what the world might have been if someone had stood up to Hitler before his massive war machine reached its maximum strength, almost enough to conquer the world.

Maybe we ought to consider that when we think about Serbia just being a “local problem.”

Notes . . .

A bit of  “Peanut” wisdom comes from TOM STANFIELD.  He believes you’re getting old when you remember the story well, but forget who you told it to.

********

A recent visitor to Post 4848 recently was LARRY DALTON.  He was on his way to a Third District meeting.

********

Usually, when FRED TUCKER visits Chattanooga, the state Veterans Affairs commissioner is accompanied by his assistant JOHN FURGESS.  John was unable to make the CAVC meeting Mar. 19.  A ‘flu bug had bitten him.

*******

Sometimes labels don’t make much sense.  JERRY CHRISTIAN is puzzled over a quart of oil he bought which said “not to be sold or used outside the US.”  Surely, they didn’t expect someone to change oil if the got to the border.

*******

Apologies to DAVID WILSON who was listed in the last Flag as being elected chaplain.  David is the new surgeon.  BILL LEDFORD continues to do a great job as chaplain.

********

We ought to get TED BEDOIT to give us directions to his fountain of youth.  He just turned 83, but continues to look 20 or 30 years younger.

********

For the first time, the Chattanooga  Area Veterans Council holds its installation banquet on a different night than the election.  Reservations went in late for the Choo Choo.  The meeting was Mar. 19.  The banquet, Apr. 9.

********

A computer “expert” says there’s no Y2K problem, that all computers built after 1995 already had corrections.  Older ones are being fixed.
