Four votes decides commander’s race

Bill Tickle given 3rd term

David Wilson Sr. Vice, Oscar Farrow Jr. Vice
as officers chosen to carry Post 4848 into 2000

Four votes made the difference in a tightly contested race for commander of Post 4848 as Bill Tickle won a record breaking third consecutive term. Other commanders have—most recently George Hancock and Jim Perry—held office three times, but not in order.

David Wilson defeated Larry McBryar for Sr. Vice with 62 votes over eight.

And Oscar Farrow garnered 57 votes to Bob Bitler’s ten votes for Jr. Vice.

No candidate was listed for chaplain, but Bill Ledford was given 12 writein votes.

Other offices were filled without opposition.

They were: Quartermaster Mac McGuffey,
                   Judge Advocate Ted Bedoit,
                   Surgeon James Tollett,

Trustee John Scott and Executive Board members Bill Bordwine and Pete Chaney.

Mac will be serving his seventh consecutive term. All offices are for one year, except for trustee and executive board which are for three years. Each year the terms expire for one trustee and two e-board members. Nominations were made at the Apr. 1 membership meeting. They were: for commander Bob Blair by Doug Gallant and Bill Tickle by David Farris; for sr. vice David Wilson by Joe Cheek and Larry McBryar by Doug Gallant; for jr. vice Bob Bitler by Oscar Farrow and Oscar by Bob Blair; for quartermaster Mac McGuffey by John Scott; for judge advocate Ted Bedoit by Tom Stanfield; for surgeon James Tollett by Pete Chaney; Bill Ledford declined the nomination for chaplain; for trustee John Scott by Boqou; for e-board Pete Chaney by Bill Carman and Bill Bordwine by David Farris.

Terms of officers begin with the state convention in the summer.

Comment . . . Pete Chaney

My favorite Mark Twain quote is about smoking. He said it was easy to quit smoking. He knew because he had quit many times.

Wonder if ole Mark had the same kind of tobacco we have today, with all the additives to keep us hooked. We all know the reasons to put down the nicotine, but each of us has to fight his own tobacco devil. And the worst thing in the world is a reformed smoker. They’re even worse than reformed alcoholics. They give us unwanted lectures. They fan at imaginary smoke coming their way. They give us dirty looks when we light up.

To most of us that makes it even harder to quit. We Americans are rebels at heart, wanting it to be our own decision, not one forced on us by a "Big Brother" government or even by a dear friend. No matter how many signs they take down, or how much tax they burden us with, when each of us quits it will be our own choice.

They can hide the nicotine under the counter, even put cigarettes in the back room. The government can make them illegal, as California has almost done, or make us search out bootleggers for a drag. If we want nicotine, we will find a way to get it.

Our admiration is to our friends who have quietly kicked the habit. Any smoker knows what they are going through.

One thing for certain, we’ll be more tolerant of alcoholics or drug addicts. We know what they’re going through.

Notes . . .

The post had some enjoyable visitors recently. Mayor JON KINSEY dropped by with his Executive Assistant KEN HAYS and Parks and Recreation Director JERRY MITCHELL. The mayor is a real down to earth guy.

********

Getting ready for three weeks National Guard maneuvers down in Mississippi, PAUL SHELTON Jr. has returned to be one of the regulars a the post.

********

When he went to buy "his dress" at a resale store, MAC McGUFFEY asked the clerk if the dress would fit him. Then he quickly explained it was for the post’s womanless wedding. He still has to learn how to walk in high heels though. Mac nearly broke is leg when he fell stepping off the stage.

********

The shotgun was won by SHERRY PENDERGRASS. She deserved it. Anytime the post has a project, Sherry takes part.

*******

Among the reservists who may be called up for a trip to Yugoslavia may be Post 4848 member STAN DISORDA. He has already been to Bosnia once, but his enlistment is up this summer and he’ll probably miss being sent overseas.

********

To avoid a long meeting, no speaker was planned for the annual CAVC awards-installation banquet. It still lasted for nearly three hours.
