100th VFW gathering to be in Kansas City

Commander heads for convention

Bill Tickle is packing his bags. The Post 4848 commander will be leading a group from the post heading for the 100th National VFW Convention which will be held in Kansas City Aug. 14-20.

"I’m anxious for this trip," Bill said, and proud to be a part of the Veterans of Foreign Wars for the marking of a century of service to veterans and America."

Bill’s wife Geraldine will join him for the trip, along with Fred and Anna Kizer, John and Alice Scott and several others.

The post members will have four delegates at the convention and the women will have three.

The meeting will be at the Bartle Hall Convention Center. This is the second VFW convention held at Kansas City, the first being in 1931.

Highlights of the meeting will include an air show and a VFW Memorial Service.

"I’m sure we will bring back valuable information which will help our post reach into the next century," the commander commented.

Pockin' & grinnin' Aug. 26

Dalton Roberts with his guitar and a few friends will be at Post 4848 Thursday, Aug. 26, at 3 PM to volunteer some music talent to members, friends and guests. A friend of the post and veterans, Dalton has offered his talents and help.

A September benefit is being planned to begin raising money for a boat dock on the Tennessee River behind the property. Dalton has joined the committee to fund and construct a dock which will be available for all VFW members worldwide.

Oscar Farrow hits ground at full run

No stranger to hard work at Post 4848, Oscar Farrow started his term as jr. vice commander at a full run.

With the aid of volunteers, he is continuing previous programs and started new ones. Hot weather didn’t slow down the group he put together to clean off the riverbank behind the post.

A clear view of the river and location of the planned boat dock will be available.

Joining Oscar’s work party were Bart Crattie, Jack Thomas, Joe Cheek, Fred Cartwright, Rod Walker and David Wilson.

The dinners for families waiting on patients in surgery at Memorial Hospital will continue on the fourth Wednesday of each month sponsored by 4848.

"We very much appreciate the Ladies Auxiliary joining us with the Memorial program and other projects," Oscar said. "I particularly thank them for the cakes they donated at the Fourth of July picnic with the money going to the building fund."

He thanked them for helping with the watermelon cutting July 9 at Chambliss Children’s Home and for volunteering for the watermelon cutting at the Red Bank nursing home set for Aug. 2.

Ben Crabtree voted to e-board position

At the July membership meeting, Ben Crabtree was elected to fill the open position on the e-board created by Oscar Farrow’s election as jr. vice.

He received 15 votes to Jerry Christian’s 10 votes. Ben was nominated by Bill Bordwine and Jerry, by Pete Chaney.

Election will be held to fill open slots for the e-board and for trustee. These are open because of resignations.

Jr. Auxiliary planned by Post 4848 ladies

The Ladies Auxiliary of Post 4848 want to start a Jr. Auxiliary for young women 6 to 16.

"If you have or know a member who has a daughter or granddaughter, please contact us," Auxiliary President Gail Anderson said. "We need at least ten to have a charter. Jackie Prigmore has the information and can be reached at 344-3529 or you can call me at 870-4709."

A check for $188 went to the post building fund from cakes baked and sold by the ladies at the Independence Day barbecue. Gail thanked all those who took part.

She urged members to join the Aug. 2 watermelon cutting at Lifecare of Red Bank on Runyon Dr. And Gail reminded members to attend the Aug. 5 meeting and "bring a friend."

Changing post hours?

Division over the e-board vote to cut opening hours from noon to 3 PM was blocked by the membership meeting. It was tabled until the August meeting on a motion by James Tollett, seconded by Bill Carman.

Oscar Farrow made the motion at the e-board with a second by David Wilson, and was passed by one vote. Mac McGuffey opposed the change, saying "this is a members’ post and we don’t want to cut services."

Positions filled at the e-board meeting were poppy drive David Farris, New Years dance Bill Bordwine with Jack Thomas handling decorations , CAVC Bill Carman, VOD Fred Kizer and Fred, Oscar Farrow and John Scott on the building committee

Comment . . . pete chaney

If you have enough money and prestige, you can join the swankiest country club around. If you have a degree in engineering, you can join an engineers’ society. Or a medical degree will get you medical society.

Those who want to do community service and associate with friends can join Sertoma, Lions, Rotary or other active groups.

But there is one organization that no amount of money or social prestige can buy membership in. It doesn’t require a college degree or special ethnic heritage. It requires something special. Service to America in the military.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars is for those men and women who went to defend their country on hostile soil when America was in danger, in a period of war, "police action," or when danger threatened. Put a few veterans around a table and each has a tale to contribute. Normandy. Berlin. Tokyo. Seoul. Kuwait.

Problem is the gray heads are getting even grayer. Our World War I veterans are almost gone. World War II are getting fewer. Korea has less to remember what happened.

David Wilson, as sr. vice commander and membership chairman needs help in keeping those members we may have lost and to find new comrades.

Younger veterans must be reached to carry the torch of the meaning of the VFW. This very special organization must continue, to remind America what has been contributed—and what may be needed again.

All Post 4848 members should pitch in with David to keep our membership growing. Especially we need new veterans who will continue the work when older members are no longer able to.

Post 4848 has a beautiful location, good leadership and a bright future.

Let’s find those veterans who can continue the work.

Lt. Gen. DAN ROGERS will join JOHN GERM as co-chairman for the 2000 Armed Forces Day Week and parade. This will be John’s second term to head the event sponsored by the Chattanooga Area Veterans Council

When MIKE LINER brought SHEILA RUNYON by the post, she was fresh back from a Japan trip as a Delta stewardess. A tall girl, Sheila had problems with some of the facilities of the usually smaller Japanese people.
