Boat drive fund grows Thanks particularly to the efforts of Dalton Roberts, Post 4848s Veterans Boat Dock project is moving ahead. Nearly $5,000 of the estimated needed $26,000 has been raised. Dalton, former Hamilton County executive and a professional musician, hosted a benefit to bring in funds at the post in September. Post Commander Bill Tickle he was well pleased with the start of the drive. Oscar Farrow, post jr. vice, was named dock committee chairman at the October e-board meeting. "We have a long, long ways to go," Oscar commented, "but well get there." Other veteran organizations have made contributions as well as many individuals. The dock will be available to VFW members from around the world. Located on the bank of the Tennessee River, Post 4848 has an ideal site for the dock which will tie in with the Riverwalk and Chattanoogas celebration of the river. Mayor John Kinsey, his Chief of Staff Ken Hays and Parks and Recreation Director Jerry Mitchell have offered cooperation and encouragement. Through the internet, the post is reaching to veterans organizations around the world to aid in the program. Serving with Oscar on the dock committee are Joe Cheek, Doug Gallant and Pete Chaney, with assistance from Dalton. |

National Home graduate visits post Each Veterans of Foreign Wars meeting a prayer is offered to "remember our National Home" which serves parentless children of veterans at the VFW sponsored institution in Michigan. At the October e-board meeting, Bill Bordwine made the motion, seconded by David Farris, to make the 50-cent hourly raise for bartenders retroactive to Sept. 15. A motion made by Bill Bordwine and seconded by Pete Chaney gave them a $100 Christmas bonus. Oscar Farrow was named chairman of the boat dock committee, moved by Pete and seconded by David Farris. Comment . . . pete chaney They rest in peace now. These gallant men and women who were there when their country needed them, who gave their all that fellow Americans could enjoy the peace and prosperity offered in the hopes of the Twenty First Century. Their markers reach back nearly 150 years. Veterans are there who were at San Juan Hill, in the trenches in France, at the Battle of the Bulge, in the jungles of Vietnam. Some were on the frontline swapping fire. Some were at a desk stateside. They all served. Only they, veterans with an Honorable discharge, have a place in our National Cemeteries. Only they have a right to such hallowed ground. Each year on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month Americans pause to honor Veterans Day. It began after World War I, the War to End All Wars, and was called Armistice Day. As more men and women served in more wars, it became Veterans day. For a moment let us pause Veterans Day to give thanks to those who have gone before us, those who paid dearly for our liberty. |
