Cooties change time for monthly meeting

Meeting time for Pup Tent 21 of the MOC and MOCA will be changed to 4 PM on the second Sunday in June. Seam Squirrel Bill Bordwine asked all members to make a note of this.

Cooties returned May 20 from the state COA meeting at Lawrenceburg where new state officers were elected. Two Pup 21 members took state office—Tommy Duckworth as adjutant and Roy Stone as historian.

"This is an honor for them and our post," Bill commented. "And I was proud to present an award to Doug Gallant for outstanding as our quartermaster and adjutant."

A dinner and dance followed the meeting.

State meeting will be in Chattanooga in September.

Comment . . . pete chaney

Memorial Day is a day of sadness. We hear the names of our friends who left us during the past year. They are read during the ceremony joined by the names of veterans of other posts.

It bring us memories of those we will never see again at meetings, at veterans functions, in the lounge. It reminds us of brief our time span really is and how fragile life can be.

It is sad to know we will be deprived of these friendships, of the stories we shared. The comradeship we enjoyed is gone. We remember what they did for us, for their post and for their country. Some served on the battlefield. Some, on the high seas. Some might have been behind the lines, but could have been called to the front at any time. And they would have gone because they loved their country.

There was a bond between us. Whatever the service or wherever it was, we all knew what it was like, an often unspoken memory—because it was unnecessary to express it.

Yes, Memorial Day is a sad time. And it is also a happy time. Our lives are better from knowing them. Our country is better for having them ready when America needed them.

Everyone Pays

May action by the e-board approved by membership included having all persons attending dances to pay admission. Those working the door had been in free.

And $7,200 was allocated to John Scott for construction of a new bar.

Notes . . .

Attending the VFW Washington Conference when he was post commander, JIM ROGERS was greeted by Rep. ZACH WAMP who said, "Here’s my commander." Zach has been at the post often and feels almost like a member.

********

When he was called for grand jury, OSCAR FARROW was told he would be paid $13 a day. But he would have to pay for his own parking place and meals. Another juror asked Oscar if the court officials worked for the same pay.

********

Members have had the benefit of first hand information from the visits of representatives HAYES LEDFORD from the governor’s staff and TYLER OWENS from Sen. BILL FRIST‘s office.

********

The family of Sgt. ALVIN C. YORK were in town for the Armed Forces Day celebrations. A year ago they were at Post 4848 to help in saving veteran medical facilities.

********

Everyone is glad to see BOB BLAIR feeling better and back on the VFW scene. He’s recuperating from illness.

A top story on Memorial Day services was in the Times Free Press written by EMILY McDONALD with photography by JOHN RAWLSTON. Emily has been a friend to Post 4848.
