Veterans Dock survives
rising of Tennessee River

Floating above the rising Tennessee River, Post 4848's dock acts like a dam to check debris.  Members quickly removed the trash after the water receded.  (Photo by Doug Gallant)

Post 4848’s Veterans Dock survived the rapid rise of the Tennessee River from heavy rainfalls the end of January.  Other docks went under water.

The city dock at Ross’s Landing was completer submerged.

Rushing waters covered the landing to the dock and rose over the bottom five steps leading to the landing.  The dock floated above it all.

It did become a dam, catching debris, branches and even large tree limbs and logs.  When the water receded, a volunteer crew of members cleared it away.

Ted Bedoit resigns, election planned for Judge Advocate

A vacancy in the staff of Post 4848 officers will be filled at the February membership meeting.

Ted Bedoit, who has served many years in different positions, resigned his job as Judge Advocate at the January meeting.  He cited family obligations as the reason.

Commander Bill Tickle announced that nominations for the post and an election will be held at the February meeting.  Jim Harmon’s name has been suggested.

Anna Kizer asks members pay auxiliary dues

Membership chairman of the Ladies Auxiliary Anna Kizer is urging members to be sure to continue their membership uninterrupted.

“With the number of women suffering cancer,” she declared, “it is urgent that the cancer insurance that comes with membership not be lost.

“At least four members have that dread disease.”

Cost of coverage is $4.95 per member and may be sent to Anna.

 Comment . . . Pete Chaney

Like they say, time flies when you’re having fun.  It’s hard to realize that it was ten years ago when I began doing the newsletter for Post 4848.  Before then, it was done on a irregular basis.

But it’s not hard to realize when I look back at old issues of The Flag in my computer.  There are names there that live only in our memories.  Acts they did for the post are listed there and only the results of their work are visible at the post.

Names like Frank Cloud, Jack Rickett, Paul Sorrick, Guss Howe are there, members we will not see at our meetings again.  But we will remember them.

When I started doing the newsletter, I figured it was a contribution especially for member who can’t attend all the meetings or be here in person.  It lets them stay in touch.

Notes . . .

The death of HAROLD RUSSELL was a personal loss to our Honor Guard Commander RALPH WILSON.  Ralph served in WWII with the double amputee who won the Academy Award for “The Best Years of Our Lives.”  Harold lost both hands diffusing a land mine and went on to hold national offices in the VA and DAV.
